About the Parish

The Parish of Highclere is in North Hampshire, within the borough of Basingstoke and Deane.

Highclere layoutIt lies astride the A343 Newbury to Andover road on the north slope of the North Hampshire Downs, between the Downs and the valley of the River Enborne, and is almost entirely within the North Downs Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

It has five main settlements - Highclere, the Highclere Estate, Highclere Street, Penwood and Wash Water, all with excellent communication links.

The area’s outstanding feature is the magnificent Highclere Castle and its surrounding estate, the home of the Earl and Countess Carnarvon.
